European flat-rolled aluminium supplier Aludium announced the debut of its own certified low-carbon flat-rolled aluminium product that has a carbon footprint of less than half that of Europe’s standard flat-rolled aluminium.
Aludium Eco is third-party certified to have a carbon footprint of less than 4 metric tons of carbon dioxide for every metric ton of flat-rolled aluminium produced. Measured from initial bauxite mining to final sale, the new product line boasts a carbon footprint among the lowest for currently available flat-rolled aluminium products.
The new line will feature three product subgroups and is intended to offer customers and end users the ability to meet their own carbon-reduction targets.
Lionel Chapis, CEO of Aludium, elaborated upon the new product line in a related press release.
“Advancing the low-carbon transition is core to Aludium’s company strategy, and the development of Aludium Eco is a big step forward to offer our customers access to products certified at some of the world’s lowest levels of carbon footprint for aluminium flat rolled products. This is the fruit of years of investment in our assets, technology, and processes aiming to reduce our carbon footprint and develop sophisticated tracking to enable this transparency for our customers. Aludium Eco captures total emissions of the product through delivery to our customer and is externally certified. We will launch ‘Aludium Eco’ shipments with a select group of customers starting in 2023.”
Daniel Jubera, the company’s Chief Commercial Officer notes that Aludium’s new flat-rolled aluminium offerings provide consumers an alternative with a substantially lower carbon footprint.
“Aludium Eco’s carbon footprint is less than half that of the average of European aluminium manufacturers, which means it must be ranked as one of the world’s lowest carbon rolled aluminium products. Aludium Eco products are labelled as either Aludium Eco 4.0, 3.0, or 2.0, designating the level of total CO2 emissions per ton AL.”
“Aludium Eco 2.0’ is, at the carbon footprint level, the most efficient since, as the name suggests, its emissions are less than 2 tons of CO2 per tonne of aluminium supplied to our customers,” he continued. “‘Aludium Eco 3.0’ has an emissions level below 3 tons of CO2 for each ton supplied and ‘Aludium Eco 4.0’, below 4 tons.”
“The ‘cradle-to-gate’ carbon footprint approach includes all emissions for a product from the beginning of the supply chain (bauxite) until its delivery to Aludium’s customers, including Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions, so it captures the real carbon footprint embedded in the material from the entire value chain,” explained Samuel Kinsman, Aludium Vice President of Strategy & Transformation.
