The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) announced last week the certification of Aluminij Industries d.o.o.’s Bosnian operations under the third version of its Performance Standard.

The plant, which produces aluminium billet, slab, and small ingot, is the first such certification from a company headquartered in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It has an annual production capacity of over 200 thousand metric tons.

Aluminij’s plant is certified under the ASI Performance Standard V3 (2022) for development, sales, and production of billets, blocks, and small ingots. The plant utilizes primary aluminium, recycled aluminium, and pre-alloys to produce its product offerings.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI, lauded Aluminij’s achievement in a related press release.

“We warmly congratulate Aluminij Industries d.o.o. for achieving the first Performance Standard Certification V3 (2022) in Bosnia and Herzegovina at its foundry and casting operation in Mostar, Bosnia. In addition to being the leading importer and exporter in the country, its ASI Certification to the updated Performance Standard V3 establishes Aluminij also as a country leader as well as a global aluminium industry leader for its responsible and sustainable production practices.”

ASI’s Performance Standard is the product of consultations with a multitude of stakeholders throughout the aluminium value chain, which ASI asserts is the sole comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative in the aluminium sector. The standard defines 59 criteria categorized in three sustainability pillars that cover several issues, including biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions. Third-party audit of the certification was conducted by Bureau Veritas Certification.

Amir Gross Kabiri, Chairman of M.T. Abraham Group, noted that sustainability is continually in Aluminij’s top of mind.

“Aluminij emphasizes the interdependent environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainable development by putting sustainability at the core of its operation. Our ability to be a force for change relies on the divergent perspectives of diligent and committed employees from diverse backgrounds. Striving for excellence and integrity, Aluminij will retain its focus on sustainability, while successfully minimizing CO2 emissions in its operation. With the immense expertise of our team, Aluminij continues its ongoing objective to shape the industry toward a greener future.”

The ASI is a worldwide organization dedicated to setting industrial standards and certifications in the aluminium industry. The association brings together the various stakeholders in the aluminium industry in order to achieve objectives including sustainable production methods, material chain-of-custody procedures, recycling, social impacts related to aluminium production, and production standards.
