The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) this week certified Alcoa’s smelting and casting operations at Portland, Australia under its Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification for sustainable production.

The site has a nameplate production capacity of 358 thousand metric tons per year. It is a joint venture among Alcoa of Australia Limited, CITIC Nominees Pty Ltd., and Marubeni Aluminium Australia Pty Ltd., and Alcoa of Australia Limited is owned by Alcoa Corporation and Alumina Limited.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI, lauded the accomplishment in a press release.

“We congratulate Alcoa on achieving ASI Performance Standard Certification at its Portland, Australia smelting and casting operations. This certification not only acknowledges the efforts of Alcoa Portland but also recognizes Alcoa’s ongoing commitment to add additional ASI certified facilities throughout its global operations – now at 18 – and demonstrate that sustainability is not just a goal, but a core driver of success in the aluminum smelting industry.”

ASI’s Performance Standard is the product of consultations with a multitude of stakeholders throughout the aluminium value chain, which ASI asserts is the sole comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative in the aluminium sector. The standard defines 59 criteria categorized in three sustainability pillars that cover several issues, including biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions. Third-party audit of the certification was conducted by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.

“Alcoa and its joint venture partners at Portland Aluminium are delighted to have achieved ASI Performance Standard Certification for our Portland smelting and casthouse operations,” commented Rob Bear, Acting Vice President of Operations for Alcoa of Australia.

The ASI is a worldwide organization dedicated to setting industrial standards and certifications in the aluminium industry. The association brings together the various stakeholders in the aluminium industry in order to achieve objectives including sustainable production methods, material chain-of-custody procedures, recycling, social impacts related to aluminium production, and production standards.
