Norsk Hydro to Convert Aluminium Extrusion Plants In Sweden to Solar Power – Aluminium Insider

Norwegian aluminium producers Norsk Hydro ASA will begin a project at its extrusions plants in Sweden to convert their power sources to solar power generation.

As part of the Greener Sweden project, Norsk Hydro intends to convert its plants in Vetlanda, Sjunnen, and Finspång to all locally-produced sustainable energy. Ultimately, Hydro hopes to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions at those plants to zero while enhancing the community around those plants.

Jonas Bjuhr, Managing Director at Hydro Extrusions Sweden, said in a press release that the conversion to solar at the plants is an important undertaking.

“It is amazing to see that Greener Sweden is moving from idea to action. Passively watching as global climate change becomes increasingly apparent has never been an option for Hydro. We want to lead the way in tackling climate change and continue to manufacture aluminium profiles that make a positive difference for our customers and employees. That is the core of Greener Sweden.”

The conversion will be carried out in three phases: roof-mounted and ground-mounted solar panel installation in phase one, and adding wind and/or hydrogen power in phase two. Hydro estimates that the second phase will not begin until after 2025.

Marianne Wergeland Jenssen, Head of Energy Solutions, Hydro Rein, said that the change is part of its long-range goals.

“Hydro Extrusion Sweden is leading the way with clear action. It means a lot that they manage to set long-term goals while also taking advantage of existing potential in energy efficiency and locally produced renewable energy. It does not only have an effect on the CO2 footprint of the factories, but shows the way for the entire industry. We need a mix of all energy solutions in order to reach our climate goals.”
