Atlanta’s rolled aluminium firm Novelis Inc. broke ground on a US$2.5 billion recycling and rolling plat in Bay Minette, Alabama this week.

The project, which is expected to employ 1,000 workers, will ultimately yield a plant with a capacity to produce up to 600 thousand metric tons of finished aluminium goods per annum. Although initially the plant will make aluminium beverage can materials, the plant will also be able to be configured to make aluminium automotive parts.

Upon completion, the Bay Minette aluminium plant will boost Novelis’ recycling capacity by 15 billion aluminium cans per year.

Steve Fisher, President and CEO of Novelis, said in a press release that the project is proof positive of his firm’s commitment to aluminium sustainability.

“Through this investment, we want to demonstrate the strength of our growing customer partnerships, the commitment we have to sustainably grow our business, and the innovative, forward-thinking approach we are taking to modern manufacturing. We are especially proud to celebrate our groundbreaking of this state-of-the-art facility on National Manufacturing Day, which highlights the exciting career opportunities available in our industry.”

Tom Boney, Executive Vice President and President of Novelis North America, emphasized the importance of this new project.

“Today marks an important milestone for our Novelis team as we ramp up construction and grow our team. We seek to become an integral part of this community, contributing to the local economy and advancing residents’ quality of life every step of the way.”

“We are grateful for the support we have received from the state, Baldwin County, Bay Minette and other partners as we build our home here in Alabama,” he continued.

Novelis is a subsidiary of Mumbai’s Hindalco Industries Ltd. Based in Atlanta, the firm accounts for almost half of Hindalco’s consolidated revenue. The world’s largest recycler of aluminium, Novelis conducts operations in ten different countries, employs around eleven thousand people, and reported US$17.1 billion in net sales for the most recent fiscal year.
