Novelis Debuts New Low-Carbon Laminated Aluminium Coating For Beverage Can Ends – Aluminium Insider

Atlanta’s rolled aluminium firm Novelis Inc. announced this week a new colored laminated surface for its aluminium beverage can ends that is more efficient to produce and is made with a lower carbon footprint than standard aluminium can ends.

The new aluminium can ends, which will be officially debuted at ALUMINIUM 2022 in Düsseldorf, Germany, retain the ability to hold color without using Bisphenol A (BPA) and per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as well as meeting all requirements for materials used by the food and beverage industry.

The new colored coating is applied to aluminium beverage can ends at Novelis’ Göttingen rolled aluminium plant via a process using both pressure and heat. The coating reduces carbon emissions by up to one-third compared to conventional coatings and do not hinder beverage can recycling, as it is removed as an organic component in the recycling process.

Alexander Kuzan, Vice President of Can for Novelis Europe, said in a press release that the new colored aluminium can coating meets a growing need of the food and beverage industry.

“This innovation meets the food and packaging industry’s requirements for high-quality, lower CO2 footprint material. Together with our customers, we are creating better, more sustainable products and efficient manufacturing processes. Using high levels of recycled aluminium in our products helps reduce the consumption of natural resources, strengthen the circular economy and limit climate change.”

Novelis is a subsidiary of Mumbai’s Hindalco Industries Ltd. Based in Atlanta, the firm accounts for almost half of Hindalco’s consolidated revenue. The world’s largest recycler of aluminium, Novelis conducts operations in ten different countries, employs around eleven thousand people, and reported US$17.1 billion in net sales for the most recent fiscal year.
