Oman aluminium smelter Sohar Aluminium and global conglomerate General Electric (GE) this week signed a services contract to maintain and repair four GE gas turbines at Sohar’s aluminium plant.
The new contract covers four GE13E2 natural gas turbines and four generators installed alongside them. GE has agreed to repair, maintain, and provide parts for the four turbines and four generators. In addition, GE Digital will also provide Asset Performance Management (APM) software for the equipment.
The contract covering the 696 MW of capacity runs for ten years. Neither party revealed financial details of the agreement.
Said Al Masoudi, Chief Executive Officer at Sohar Aluminum said in a press release that the new agreement is critical to the plant’s production.
“Stable electricity supply is a key input for our manufacturing processes and essential for continuous operations at Sohar Aluminium. The GT13E2 units at our site have provided critical power output since they were first installed in 2009, supporting our growth and enabling us to keep meeting customer commitments. Now, we are delighted to continue our collaboration with GE to maintain the sustained, reliable performance of these essential assets to support our business in the decade ahead.”
Joseph Anis, President & CEO of GE Gas Power Europe, Middle East, and Africa said they are happy to provide such critical services for Sohar Aluminium.
“Diversification efforts through the expansion of non-oil and gas sectors are an important component of Oman Vision 2040. Sohar Aluminium is one of the key industrial contributors in the country to realizing the aspirational goals of this plan. At GE, we are honored to work closely with them on their growth journey and remain committed to bringing our industry-leading solutions to Sohar Aluminium and the Sultanate to further support the national development agenda.”
Sohar Aluminium’s power plant produces a total of 1,000 MW, and is optimized to run with low emissions, low costs, and minimal environmental impact. Sohar also operates a seawater pumping station and a desalinization station for providing the plant with clean water for cooling and other purposes.
